Tim Mowl


Timothy Mowl
Tim Mowl has had two parallel professional careers, one as an academic in the fields of art and architectural history and garden and landscape design, the other as an architectural consultant. He is Emeritus Professor of History of Architecture & Designed Landscapes at the University of Bristol and the author of over thirty books on subjects as wide ranging as Elizabethan architecture and twentieth-century aesthetics.

In the conservation sector, Tim worked first as an Inspector of Historic Buildings for English Heritage, then as Architectural Advisor for Bath Preservation Trust and served latterly as President of Cheltenham Civic Society. He combines a sure grasp of the scholarly research required for architectural consultancy with a sound knowledge of conservation issues. He is also is well informed about garden and landscape design as it is affected by the planning process, having completed 14 books in a nationwide series on the historic gardens of England. Tim has just finished writing his study of Hampshire, which will be published in May. His latest research project is centred on Regency gardens to coincide with the twin anniversaries of Jane Austen’s death in 2017 and Humphry Repton’s in 2018.

Carole Fry  

Carole Fry
Dr Carole Fry is a specialist consultant with wide-ranging experience in the field of conservation and architectural history. She worked for fifteen years in the public sector, which included a period with English Heritage in the Parks and Gardens team, before progressing to the London Borough of Harrow as Conservation Officer, and latterly to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council as Principal Conservation Officer.

Carole holds an MSc in Historic Conservation from Oxford Brookes University, which she completed before embarking on a PhD in neo-Palladian architecture at the University of Bristol. Carole writes a regular column on aspects of architectural history for Context and has been a director of AHC for six years, combining a strong academic background with practical conservation and commercial capabilities.
